Today, I am publishing ideas and tips that I have been discussing online and with my family to help you update your digital presence during the pandemic. I worked particularly closely with my daughter Queen Jenny, discussing the need to take advantage of the lock-down to build an effective online presence to promote the ideas that she has always shared with me. This article is inspired by my conversations with many people, but most particularly with her.
But let me first describe how this all started. Early this year 2020, the world woke up to a new reality as COVID-19 erupted in many countries. There is no denying that there was general panic as businesses closed, cities became empty, even the climate changed as most human industrial activities shut down. We all turned to the only place where we were and continue to be physically safe for Coronna Virus: the Internet.
So, as the COVID-19 outbreak has forced people world over to not only stay home but also to innovate new ways to continue being productive while remaining safe. Families, friends, Churches, businesses and governments all turned to the web to not just maintain productivity but also find new ways to do what we suddenly could no longer do in person. This has suddenly made all kinds of businesses realize that their websites just became 10 times more important. During this time, upgrading your business’s digital presence is more vital than ever before.
While many activities were already taking place online, many have discovered new opportunities to launch their ideas through the web. As millions of people lost their jobs and livelihoods around the globe, many people were forced to dig deep within and recreate a new approach to stay relevant in the new reality and develop connect with the world.
The smallest of changes can yield big results. Keeping this in mind, we bring to you a list of some pretty solid ideas to take your digital presence up a notch.
In Every Crisis, New Opportunities Emerge
The ideas I am describing below including many things that I discussed with my daughter Queen Jenny. I must say that this was one of the best moments that I have had with her. She is a student of Micro-Biology at the Coal University in Enugu, in Nigeria. So, all of our work was done online and through the phone. She is a very intelligent young lay and a real entrepreneur. The lock-down meant that she was at home. And we worked on her school assignment on how to create a Business Plan. So, this was really a wonderful moment.
As a result, today, Queen Jenny is launching her own business, Jennese Crownz. She and I are working on publishing her first blog post, which should come out some time latest next week. I believe that the story of my daughter will be able to inspire many other young people to take advantage of this moment and unleash their creativity.
What Is A Digital Presence?
Your Digital Presence can be defined as any profile that you have created on the web that describes your ideas and contains a call to action to your audience to take your desired action. This could simply be a Social Media profile, such as a Facebook profile, Instagram profile, LinkedIn profile, etc. Maybe you only have your own personal profile, just like my daughter did before we started working on updating her digital presence.
Or maybe all you have is an email address. The following ideas are intended to help you strengthen your existing profile or create a new one if you do not have one. And if all you have is personal profile, these ideas will also help you expand to a business digital presence that
No matter what your ideas are, please remember that the Internet is a vast global village with billions of people online. In order for you to be effective, you must learn how to stand out and increase your visibility to your target audience. I will not discuss in details what to do to increase your visibility.
If you are interested in learning more about that, please subscribe to this blog (at the bottom of this article, you can enter your name and email address and check the box to be notified to future posts and activities on this blog. My focus in this article is to demonstrate the need for you to have and / or update your digital presence in order to stand out on this vast world wide web.
Interesting Statistics About The Internet
Today, like never before, the Internet is and will continue to transform the way we live our lives. Everything from the way we connect socially, congregate for Church service, transact business, and every other aspect of individual and economic activities is increasingly dependent on the Internet.
But in spite of the fact that over half the population of the world has gone digital, Internet accessibility and availability differs significantly by region (Statista).
Live Internet Statistics
Total Number of Websites
According to ‘Internet Live Stats‘, there are over 1.5 billion websites on the world wide web today. Of these, less than 200 million are active. The milestone of 1 billion websites was first reached in September of 2014, as confirmed by NetCraft in its October 2014 Web Server Survey and first estimated and announced by Internet Live Stats (see the tweet from the inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee).
Please note that ‘Website‘ here means a unique host name (a name which can be resolved, using a name server, into an IP Address). This number therefore includes parked domains. As a result, about 75% of the reported total number of websites are actually not active. In our day-to-day language, I would say that these parked domains are not active websites.
So, there were 1,798,564,635 website online worldwide today at 1:40 AM (United States Chicago Time). Out of this total, 550 Millions represented active websites. This is still a substantive number. At this same hour, there were 4,671,788,140 active Internet users worldwide. These numbers are for Wednesday September 9th, 2020.
Total Emails Sent
By 1:40 AM today (United States Chicago Time, 17,734,421,469 emails had been sent online. This number reached 39,005,104,925 emails.
A total of 52,831,482 tweets had been sent by 1:40 AM. And by 3:30 AM, the number had increased to 116,198,016 tweets sent.
5,878,247 photos had been uploaded to the Internet by 1:40 AM. The number had grown to 12,928,736.
A total of 496,438,481 videos had been viewed by 1:40 AM. And bu 3:36 AM, the nuber had grown to 1,091,873,428.
The total number of emails sent, tweets fired, photos uploaded and videos viewed represent activities for just today Wednesday September 9th, 2020. If you want to check the total for various statistics at any given time of the day or night, please go to Live Internet Stats.
As you can see, the Internet is quite a busy place. It is therefore not just enough to have a basic digital presence. You must therefore have an effective digital strategy to succeed. It is no longer enough to just have a Facebook profile and / or page. Your Digital Marketing Strategy must be tailored to your ideas. Yet, many people I have discussed with believed and many continue to believe that a Facebook profile would do it for them.
However, no matter what your idea is, a well-designed and fully-optimized website is a must for you. It must be your hub so that you may drive traffic to this one place. It is true that most Social Media platforms are now seeking to hold people onto their platforms – Facebook and Instagram are now creating an environment for users to complete their sale process on their platforms so that people won’t have to leave the platform, it is still important to remember that you do not really own your profile or page on Facebook, for instance. It can be shut down any time. There are also issues of intellectual property rights, etc.
You can not adequately define your Brand and promote your ideas on a Facebook profile or page alone, for instance, in the same way you can on your website and / or blog. That’s why the time is now for you to update your digital presence and position yourself to dominate your niche in the new economy.
